Fireworks Safety

Section 4-613 of the Kearney City Code states “It shall be unlawful for any person to throw any firecracker, firework or any object which explodes upon contact with another object:

A.   From, at, or into a motor vehicle.

B.   Onto any street, highway or sidewalk.

C.   At or near any person.

D.   Into any building.

E.   Into or at any group of persons.

The Code also states that “It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge any fireworks or explosives in any City park.”

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind citizens that fireworks are dangerous, but if used properly can be enjoyable. Please follow these safety tips when using fireworks for entertainment:

·        A responsible adult should always supervise young people when purchasing and lighting fireworks. Never allow young children play with or ignite fireworks or sparklers.

·        Purchase only permissible fireworks sold in Nebraska.

·        Never experiment with homemade or altered fireworks.

·        Before you enjoy fireworks, get permission from the property owner.

·        Light fireworks in a safe area free of dry tall grass, buildings, and free of flammable and combustible materials.

·        Never point or throw fireworks at other people and be sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.

·        Light one item at a time – then move back quickly.

·        Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned.

·        Never shoot fireworks from metal or glass containers.

·        Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

·        Keep a bucket of water, wet towels, and a garden hose nearby.

·        Clean up the debris in the street by placing the debris in a bucket of water to cool.

Don’t let your fireworks destroy another person’s property. Use fireworks properly and safely during these extremely dry conditions.
