[ARCHIVED] Fire Prevention: Be Responsible

As spring and summer heat up, conditions get drier. Be prepared and be responsible with fire. Here some tips to keep in mind:

• Know and follow local and state fire regulations at home and when visiting state and federal parks.
• Nebraska law prohibits open burning without first obtaining a permit from the local fire chief.
• Before burning, consider the alternatives: composing, recycling, or hauling to a landfill.
• 100,000 people are injured by fire each year. Think before striking a match.
• When you find a fire hazard, follow the 3 R’s: Repair, Replace, or Remove.
• One small spark can forever change the land. Practice fire prevention to preserve Nebraska for your children’s future.
• Preventing fires saves lives, homes, natural resources, and taxpayer dollars.
• Never leave a debris fire or a campfire unattended.
• Allow lawnmowers to cool before refueling.
• Protect your home from wildfires. Clear high grass and debris at least 30 feet from your home.
• Never use gasoline to light a barbeque grill, campfire, or debris pile. Gasoline vapors are unpredictable.

Have a safe enjoyable spring and summer.
