[ARCHIVED] Theft from Vehicles

The Kearney Police Department has seen an increase in recent months in the number of thefts from vehicles. Many of these thefts are what we call crimes of opportunity, meaning that the thief looks for unlocked vehicles to go through and steal from. We encourage all citizens to secure and lock their vehicles at all times and keep all valuables hidden or inside the trunk for added security. Never leave a purse or wallet inside an unlocked vehicle or where a thief can see them. They often look for these items to obtain cash, credit cards, or identification cards to use for their criminal gain.

We also encourage citizens to be aware of their surroundings, watch their neighborhoods, and report any suspicious persons or activity. The Kearney Police Department also reminds citizens that it is good practice to secure and lock your homes, including your garage doors. Thieves and burglars often look for unsecured residences to enter.

By working together, we can keep Kearney a safe place to live.
