Welcome

The Kearney Public Library provides a Technology Learning Center (TLC) and Makerspace to support its mission of equal access to information and the pursuit of lifelong learning. All patrons using the TLC and/or Makerspace must abide by the Computer and Internet Access Policy detailed in Section 11 and the Patron Behavior Policy detailed in Section 7 that can be found in the library's Policy Manual.

Age Overview

  • Monitoring the activities and regulating the behavior of children or other persons requiring supervision is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or a caregiver age 12 or older.
  • Youth age six and under must be kept with a parent/guardian or a caregiver age 12 or older.
  • The library staff is not responsible for the safety, care, or supervision of children of any age, at any time, whether in the library or on library premises.

Reservations and Walk-ins

  • Reservations may be made a minimum of one day in advance. Patrons can make reservations in person, using the online form, or by calling the library.
  • When equipment is not reserved or in use, walk-ins are welcome. Advance reservations take priority. Reservations are held for 15 minutes.
  • Patrons are limited to two reservations per week (Sunday to Saturday) per device. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Makerspace staff.

General Rules

  • Library policies apply to patrons using the Makerspace. The library reserves the right to deny Makerspace access if the patron violates any part of the library’s policies, or for any other misuse of the space, as determined by library staff.
  • The Makerspace may be used only for lawful purposes; see Section 11. Patrons are prohibited from using the Makerspace equipment to create material that is:
    1. Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
    2. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others, including creating weapons of any kind, as determined by staff.
    3. In violation of another's intellectual property rights, for example, the equipment may not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
    4. For commercial use, such as producing items for sale.
  • Library staff cannot provide in-depth training concerning any of the Makerspace technologies, the internet, or computer programs. Staff will assist with basic services.
  • The library is not responsible for the creation of patron’s design file(s), the transfer of files, or for the quality of the final product. No refunds will be given, unless equipment was determined to be at fault by staff.

Patron Use Requirements

  • Use of the Makerspace requires a KPL card in good standing. Minor children must have their own card, or the parent/guardian must have a card; all in good standing.
  • All patrons using the Makerspace must follow the policies listed in section 7.2.

Patron Responsibilities

  • Patrons will not modify hardware or software or install new programs on Makerspace computers.
  • Patrons are responsible for creating their own projects, saving their work (when applicable), and respecting the workspace and equipment.
  • No food or uncovered beverages are allowed in the Makerspace.
